Minister Of Labour Appoints Industrial Inquiry Commission In Labourers Strike

Minister Exercises Authority To Facilitate Negotiations

    TORONTO, June 11 — Ontario Minister of Labour Steve Peters said
today that he has appointed an Industrial Inquiry Commission to facilitate a
resolution in the dispute involving the Labourers' International Union of
North America (LIUNA) and the Provincial Employer Bargaining Agency -
Labourers. Robert J. Herman, an experienced mediator-arbitrator with expertise
in the construction industry, has been appointed.
    The move follows a province-wide strike in the industrial, commercial and
institutional sector of the construction industry begun on June 4, 2007, by
LIUNA's members affecting construction sites including hospitals, schools and
private industries.
    "I am hopeful the inquiry will help the parties to resolve their
differences and thereby allow workers to get back on the job and construction
projects across Ontario to continue as quickly as possible," said Peters.
    Section 37 of the Labour Relations Act, 1995, gives the minister
authority to appoint a Commission "to inquire into and report to the Minister
on any industrial matter or dispute that the Minister considers advisable."
