McGuinty Government Launches New I ♥ Greenbelt Awards

A student art contest will help launch Ontario's new I ♥ Greenbelt Awards, celebrating the four-year anniversary of the world renowned Greenbelt.

As a first step, Ontario students are asked to help design the new awards and submit original artwork until March 30, 2009. The winning design will be announced in June 2009.

The awards will recognize Ontarians who have contributed significantly to supporting a strong and viable Greenbelt. The criteria and nomination process for the awards will be finalized later this spring.

Protecting the environment makes good economic sense. Research shows that the Greenbelt contributes $2.6 billion annually to local economies.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Greenbelt permanently protects 1.8 million acres of agricultural and environmentally sensitive land around the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
  • Research shows that the Greenbelt provides essential ecosystem services or benefits for eight million residents across the Greater Golden Horseshoe and values these services at least $2.6 billion each year.
