June 30, 2009 11:30 AM

The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Sudbury today launched an affordable housing project that will create 20 units of affordable housing for seniors.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka and Minister of Industry, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Member of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; John Rodriguez, Mayor of the City of Greater Sudbury; and Tullio Ricci, President of the Board of Directors of Capreol Non-Profit Housing Corporation, made the announcement today.

Today's announcement was a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of a $3.37 million project, including $827,280 from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.  The project will create 20 units of affordable housing for seniors, and is sponsored by the Capreol Non-Profit Housing Corporation.

The federal and provincial funding is complemented by more than $547,720 in municipal financial incentives.

Capreol Non-Profit Housing has been providing affordable housing in the town of Capreol, in the City of Greater Sudbury, since 1990.  They currently have 20 senior housing units.

The Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, signed in 2005, comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government.  In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.
