Ontario is investing in 92 projects that will improve the energy-efficiency, fire safety and accessibility of 16,000 social housing units in Ottawa.
The province is investing over $8.2 million towards the projects in Ottawa that will also ensure urgent roof and elevator repairs are completed. The funding is part of a $100 million investment the province provided to 47 Municipal Service Managers across Ontario to repair social housing units.
Today's announcement took place at Regina Towers, a social housing complex in Ottawa's west end, which has received $430,000 from Ottawa's share of the funding.
Investing in social housing is part of Breaking the Cycle: Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy, which will reduce the number of children living in poverty by 25 per cent over 5 years -- lifting 90,000 kids out of poverty -- by boosting benefits for low-income families and enhancing publicly-funded education.
"Ottawa families have the right to live in homes that are safe, affordable and in good condition. This funding is already having an impact and will continue to be a significant step in addressing the need for housing repairs to our community's social housing stock."
