Statement by Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Rick Bartolucci on National Peacekeepers' Day, August 9, 2009

August 9, 2009 9:00 AM

On August 9, 1974, nine Canadian peacekeepers were killed when their plane was shot down over Syria. In their memory, August 9 now marks National Peacekeepers' Day -- a day to remember the Canadians who have lost their lives while serving as international peacekeepers.

Today, it gives me great pride to acknowledge that for two decades, Ontario Provincial Police and Ontario municipal and regional police services officers as well as correctional services officers have helped bring some of the peace and security we often take for granted to war torn communities around the world.

Officers from Ontario are in high demand as peacekeepers. Their expertise and professionalism are called upon to help restore peace in many regions of the world. Their role varies widely with any given mission, from training and mentoring local police to providing humanitarian intervention, ensuring fair elections and investigating major crimes or human rights violations.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of this type of participation. We are proud to honour our officers who have volunteered for often hazardous duties overseas including Afghanistan, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Lebanon, Sudan and Timor-Leste.

I congratulate our officers who have distinguished themselves with their professionalism, dedication and commitment to peace and security here and abroad.
