McGuinty Government Supports Long-term Strategy

Ontario is helping Huron County strengthen its local economy and pursue opportunities for growth and prosperity in the region.

Huron County is moving forward to complete a number of economic development initiatives, including:

  • Conducting a property assessment to attract investment that would re-use the existing Volvo plant.
  • Developing a business case for using the Centralia College facility as an aeronautics and/or airplane refurbishing training facility.
  • Examining opportunities for the re-development of the Goderich Harbour.
  • Conducting a study to determine possible future uses for the Richard Levan Airport.
  • Focusing current marketing strategies fro the county with an emphasis on database and website development and related marketing programs.
  • Developing an Economic Development Opportunities Blueprint to unify and direct economic development efforts in the region.

The province is providing $300,000 under the Communities in Transition program to assist Huron County in implementing these initiatives.

  • Huron County consists of nine municipalities, representing the most agriculturally productive network of communities in Ontario. The County is a leader in numerous areas of agricultural technology and innovation.
  • The Ontario government has more than doubled support to municipal operating budgets. By 2011, ongoing annual operating support for municipalities will exceed $2.8 billion, an increase of more than $1.7 billion, or 160 per cent, compared to 2003.
