McGuinty Government Supports Local Stewardship Projects Province-wide

Ontario is supporting 118 projects across the province that will help protect and recover species at risk.

As part of the province's $18-million, four-year Species at Risk Stewardship Fund, this year funding of more than $4-million will support many diverse projects, including:

  • Developing educational shows for schools about species at risk, biodiversity, climate change and conservation
  • Supporting recovery of the butternut, an endangered native tree, including landowner education, monitoring and seed collection
  • An assessment of American eel abundance in the Ottawa River area, using both western science and aboriginal traditional knowledge
  • The development of a grasslands restoration model for rehabilitating sand pits and quarries for species at risk habitat.

The fund supports greater public involvement in a variety of species at risk protection and recovery activities, and is available to many eligible individuals and groups across the province.

QUICK FACTS

  • During its first three years, the Species at Risk Stewardship fund has supported more than 300 projects across the province.
