McGuinty Government Building Tomorrow's Highly Skilled Workforce

More students in Ottawa now have access to an education with a global perspective.

College and university students from Ontario can learn new languages and skills studying abroad with the help of the Ontario International Education Opportunity Scholarship.

Over 3,800 students across Ontario have benefitted from this program since it was announced in 2007. For example, Carleton University provided awards to 64 students wanting to study abroad this year. Students should contact the International or Financial Aid Office at their college or university to apply for a scholarship in 2010-11.

In addition, student refugees from some of the world's areas of greatest conflict will have an opportunity to study at Ontario colleges and universities as a result of the World University Service of Canada's (WUSC) Student Refugee Program.

"Supporting international postsecondary education is key to Ontario's future economic strength. Knowledge of other cultures and an understanding of the world are increasingly recognized as key attributes for tomorrow's corporate leaders."

 – John Milloy
Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities

"By giving our students the opportunity to study abroad we are giving them a strategic advantage to compete in the global economy. The new knowledge economy will require our students to not only have the knowledge and skills, but the experience and understanding as well."

 – Yasir Naqvi
MPP Ottawa Centre

"The opportunity to study abroad doesn't just provide students with an exceptional educational experience, it also equips them to live and work in our increasingly global economy. This funding will help enable more students on more campuses in Ontario to enjoy that enriching experience, in addition to providing students from outside of Canada the opportunity to get an education at Carleton or one of this province's other outstanding universities."

 – Dr. Roseann O'Reilly Runte
President and Vice-Chancellor, Carleton University

"Funding from the Ontario government supports the valuable contribution students make to WUSC's unique Student Refugee Program. Every year, over 300,000 university and college students help refugee students to resettle in Ontario, offering peer and other support to these newcomers. In return, students gain tangible skills and understanding of their role as global citizens. WUSC is committed to engaging youth in international development and giving them an opportunity to make a real difference in their communities."

 – Chris Eaton
Executive Director, World University Service of Canada
